Hi all,  I have extended Gothem for another month as I feel we should all give this one a go.  I am going to have a go tonight and post a score.  For a change, I am having a fairly relaxed easter long weekend!  :). I hope you all are as well.

SNES - BATMAN 89
« on: October 06, 2026, 12:53:49 am »

Hey everyone!

I'm starting this thread to share my new homebrew project for the Super Nintendo: BATMAN '89.

The idea is to build a game based on Tim Burton's 1989 Batman film, using the sprites and backgrounds from the PC Engine version (Sunsoft) as the graphical base — they fit the SNES really well in terms of style and proportions. On top of that, I'm planning to include the cutscenes from the Amiga version (Ocean), which blend in nicely from an art standpoint.

Why Batman '89 on SNES
Here's the thing: the first Batman movie never made it to the Super Nintendo.

The SNES got:

Batman Returns (1992)
Batman Forever (1995)
Batman & Robin (1997)

But Tim Burton's 1989 Batman was never developed for the SNES. It existed on NES, Game Boy, Genesis, PC Engine, and Amiga — but on Nintendo's 16-bit console, it's always been a missing chapter.

So I figured: why not build it?
The goal is to fill that gap — imagining what a Batman '89 on SNES could have been, taking the best of the existing versions and adapting it to the console.

Welcome to the first level: something different — scrapped the PC Engine backgrounds, took what I needed from the Genesis version.

Hey everyone!

After a ton of work, I'm stoked to show you the first level of my SNES game!
Nailed the color correction!
I'm really happy with how the palette turned out — it really captures that Tim Burton Batman movie vibe: dark atmospheres, sharp contrasts, that gothic mood I was going for from day one. I'd say we nailed it!

First level gameplay:
It's intentionally very simple: you just move forward to reach the end, Kung Fu Master arcade style. It's an introductory level designed to get players comfortable with the controls and the game's atmosphere without too much complexity. Anyone who grew up on classic '80s/'90s arcades will instantly recognize the feel I was going for.

What's next:
Starting Monday, I'll begin coding the second level!
Can't wait to raise the bar and add new mechanics.

Let me know what you think — feedback, impressions, constructive criticism: all welcome!
More updates coming soon!
